My Recorded Experiences With Ghosts

There is, and always has been, a ton of discussion as to whether or not ghosts exist and if we can capture them on film or other recording media. Since, over the years, we seem to be opening up our minds to the possible proof being presented to us through media and various mediums, I thought it time to share my little corner of the paranormal experience.

There has been no shortage of experiences growing up. I have always had at least one person in my life who has felt strongly about the existence of ghosts or the reality of paranormal activity and/or have experienced it first hand. Many of Martin and my friends from Toronto will tell you about the little boy ghost who used to share our Toronto 'studio' with us. He was discovered when he slid a pot lid off the counter at me. There was no other way it could have moved in that manner. Not to mention the continuously missing items in the workshop as well as misplaced things throughout the apartment itself. It was usually an item or tool we needed and after we would request its return it usually did reappear where we had last looked. That's only one small example but it is still just a story.

Below is a series of personal experiences caught on tape or photo, during a variety of projects I have been involved with. I will not say that they ARE real but I will also not say that they are not real. I simply felt the need to share with you. Do enjoy, come to your own conclusions and, if you'd like, share what you think with me. I would be curious about your thoughts BUT please no 'it's all a hoax and a crock' crap. This is not up here for profit and I'm keeping an open mind so I can only hope you will.

Thanks.

P.S. This is the beginning. I hope to put more up and develop a greater database. Feel free to email a request for updates IF I get a chance to do so.

Toronto

One of the oldest cities in Canada, Toronto is host to a multitude of ghost stories and personal experiences. Settlements, government, wars, foolish personal battles and disagreements.. No shortage of stories.

Living there all my life (until I moved to BC in 2001) I had always been around the energy and the excitement of that large, overcrowded, determined, haunted city but never have I ever had anything show up on camera until....

Somewhere around 1995 I hosted a Roger's Cable show called Hauntings and Hidden Places. We had a few things happen and they were caught on tape. I've included a small video for you to look at here. It is a smaller size version of a video I made for some curious friends. It is in Quicktime format so, if you have Quicktime, you should be able to click on the link and it will play.

I do warn those of you with 'sensitive ears' that I do say the body function 's' word in remarks to the one Ghost at University College. It's in the second set of clips. Keep in mind that I got nervous being next to this door and much of my reaction is an attempt to stay calm on camera.. For our final take, of course. Also note that 'Dorthy's orb' is tough to see at this size. I didn't want to get too big for internet. If I get time I may redo just that shot larger. We'll have to see later.

Now... We headed back to Toronto for a visit in May 2004. While there we visited the door. Some of my friends say I have an uncanny way of returning to trouble. I couldn't disappoint them but our ghost could. I found nothing there and nothing exciting happened but.... We took a few shots and one seems to have orbs in it. You be the judge.

Total photos taken in same area: 3 (only one has 'orbs')

Time of day: Roughly 6pm.

No flash. Digital Camera.

Feeling at the time? Honest Martin. I'll just take one more and then we'll motor for dinner.

Then there is this very interesting picture that has us puzzled. Victoria Day Fireworks. We were taking pictures with the 35m as it has a better zoom. To start the roll off we took a shot of the beach. We also took some with the digital but it is the 35m that produced an interesting 'shadow' (for lack of a better word). When this shot was taken there was no one on the beach ahead of the women sitting in the chairs. I used no flash (I wanted the shutter to stay open in order to catch movement and firework streaks) and it was on a tripod. To us it looks as if someone was there. We see four to six figures. We looked at other images and the video tape we took of the beach at the same time and those 'shadows' are on nothing else. It is not a double exposure as I took only the one shot and the next shot was of fireworks. A double exposure would have overlapped the firework filled sky. Being the first shot on the roll also would keep it from being a double exposure in that direction. This one is a fun one.

Time of day: Dusk.

No flash. 35m Camera.

Feeling at the time? Awwww. This is great. Back in my hometown. Gonna see things go boom. Oh look. Someone is getting the jump on the official fireworks.

Port Moody, BC

This is divided into two sections. The Port Moody Train Station and House Construction.

Train Station

I was invited along for a 'ghost research outing' to the Port Moody Train Station. I brought along my tape recorder, video recorder and both of my cameras (35mm & Digital). It wasn't drop dead exciting but it was satisfying. I have three things of note on the train station.

Photo - Of all the funky shots I took this one shot seems to have an orb in it. I was very attracted to the piano as it looks very similar to mine. I wanted to compare the two by discussing the manufacturer and the age of the two pianos. When I took the shot I was actually taking it for my own reference as the museum was looking for more info on their piano. I was thrilled to see that there seems to be an orb on the left hand side. It is small but what fascinated me was the fact that it is half off the photo. I do not know if this would support or go against the whole orb theory but I found it interesting.

Total photos taken in same area: 2

Time of day: Roughly 3:30 pm.

Flash on medium. Digital camera.

Feeling at the time? I am sooo happy to see an old piano preserved in this way. Wonder what its history is.

Another photo of quick note is this one. It is simply of my tape recorder on the floor. I have not closely listened to the tape yet but we chose to sit it on the floor in between the two outside doors that a knocking has been heard at. In between just so happened to be the door from the hall to the office. Once the door was secure and I had hit record the door suddenly swung shut, pushing the recorder with it. The staff member that was with us at the time was shocked. She had not seen that happen before and had reassured me that the door was secure (what is it with me and swinging doors?). I took this photo but I haven't dumped down the scratching sound of the recorder being pushed. Maybe in the near future.

Total photos taken in same area: 1

Time of day: Roughly 1:45 pm.

Medium flash. Digital Camera.

Feeling at the time? Perfect spot. "I'm leaving this for you. We're going to go now."

Video- It's not much but I find it interesting. This little clip is from when we went outside with the staff member to talk about the outside of the building and the rail car. We left the building with only one staff member in the building. The staff member in question was on the upper level the whole time, doing paperwork. This happened approx. 20 minutes after we left the building. I aimed my camera at this pile as someone had reported the sounds of knocking from the inside of a case in the pile. Notes: We matched it with our activities and couldn't pin point any large vehicles passing by at that time. There are no operational tracks next to this station. The closest trains are too far away AND the next tour group wasn't expected for hours. When asking the second girl if her video camera in the other room picked up any vibrations from other items in the other room, she said that it didn't so the occurrence was isolated to this room. I have looked at the tape over and over and nothing is vibrating.. Visually. Thought about pipes but the weather was moderate and no heat was on in the building and, from what I remember, the pipes for the building don't run along this part of the building.

Time of day: Roughly 2 pm.

Note: Rattle sounds quieter on the little Quicktime movie. You may have to turn the volume up but turn it back down. My remarks after aren't as soft.

Construction Site

To fill the gap between productions Martin was working on a construction site. They were fixing and rebuilding a much older house for new rental possibilities. Apparently there is also a possibility that this house will be torn down when a new road/off shoot of the Barnet will be created so the goal was to simply make it livable for a year or two. I know construction tends to kick up dust and photos like this are touch and go but I found it interesting that so many pictures were taken (as proof of Martin's talents) but only a few had 'orbs' in them. The photos are also of completed projects so there should be less 'crud' in the air. Decide for yourself.

Total photos taken in same area: 6 or more

Time of day: Roughly 6 pm. Over two different days.

Medium flash. Digital Camera.

Feeling at the time? Must get proof of Martin's talents to make something look classic again.

Burnaby

One night a friend and I needed to just get some fresh air and take a walk somewhere convenient. She recommended Deer Lake Park. There is where I was introduced to the Burnaby Art Museum (Ceperly House). I had been told about the ghost stories there and I was already fascinated with the building so it was a lovely walk. I did decide to whip out the camera and take some pictures. I put my flash on low on purpose. It gives a dark shot but a more 'honest' one as it isn't as sharp and is less likely to light up dust and/or moisture. There are a few orbs so I thought I'd include them.

Total photos taken in same area: 18

Time of day: Roughly 8 pm.

Low flash. Digital Camera.

Feeling at the time? If you are going to show yourself now would be a good time.

Movie Shoot / Indie

I was doing Set Dec and various other jobs for this small indie, here in Vancouver. We shot at a house as well as a club. When I get more time I'll go into details but for now just take a look. These are all reference shots I took for continuity. They were all different times of day and on different days. If you are curious enough I can check my old call sheets for locations and time of day. IF you are curious enough.

Total photos taken in same area: Countless.

Time of day: Varies.

Medium flash. Digital Camera.

Feeling at the time? No one better touch anything they are not supposed to.

this one and the one next were taken right after each other

on opposite sides of the room. One a reflection of the other?

This one and the next

taken after each other.

Stage Show

These are the shots we can't use for promotions. I took a ton of photos during this production's promo photo shoot and the 'orbs' were random. They showed in many pictures but not all of them. Also note that I was taking pictures from on top of a ladder (down onto the stage) but half way through I switched solely to 35mm and handed Martin the digital camera in order to take some casual and low angle shots. Some of these are also from a rehearsal a week before the show opened. Also note that the stage lights were not on during the time the photos were taken. This is only a small example. The shots I took during the show itself (when you would expect stage lights to cause 'effects') are clean and clear of any 'orbs'.

We did, also, have a number of ghost type occurrences during the run of the show. Everything from things temporarily missing and then resurfacing to flashes in the corner of the tech crews' eyes. We also had interference on the Walkie Talkies we were using to communicate from the tech booth to backstage. Now before you declare radio interference consider this. Martin and I, up in the tech booth heard nothing while our backstage stage manager heard phrases like 'Help me' and a simple 'Hello'. If it was interference then we should have heard it up in the booth.

This production happened at the Ukranian Cultural Centre (Near Hastings and Frasier) I do believe the building was built in 1928 but we have no idea what was on that site before or have any history of the building itself. If anyone knows more about the building we'd love to hear from you.

Total photos taken in same area: Many.

Time of day: 5pm.

Medium flash. Digital Camera

(I also took 3 rolls of 35mm. shots but as I took these from my master photo disk I am unsure if any of these are the 35m. I would have to cross reference with the negatives.)

Feeling at the time? If I can't stop laughing at the action these shots will suck.

The actors put just as much energy into the shoot as they did their performance.

My thoughts on Orbs

We question the existence of orbs as a legitimate proof of spiritual presence. I have heard plenty of for and against arguments. I, myself, have a hard time with orbs shot late at night with a harsh, built in flash on max. Dust is one factor but dew and mist as well as fog plays an even bigger part in false orbs. Some people argue against digital, some for. Clean or not clean lenses, sand or dirt inside the camera, breath, light refractions.. Whether or not the other items in the room are in focus or not. (Some people feel that if dust is being focused on them everything else should be out of focus.) All very viable disputes.

The shots up here are here, as I tried to figure out as many possibilities as I could to explain them and could come up with no immediate reason for the shots to wind up in that manner. I always keep my cameras clean and I am picky with the use of my flash. I also have only recently noticed such things in my photography. I have been taking pictures for many years and I have not had such a run of 'orbs' in my images. Actually. Until recently (past two/three years) I have no orbs at all in shots I have taken. The only difference I can note is that I am redeveloping a new identity and personal spirituality as well as a new outlook on life. It seems I am also developing splotchy pictures.

These images, I do believe, have a high chance of being shots of orbs. All I can say is that you decide for yourself as your own opinion is all that matters to you. We only have to truly live with ourselves and our own view on life. Me? These pictures do excite me a little and they make me think back to what I was feeling and experiencing when I took the shot, so if anything they serve as memory and, in some ways, my own personal 'ghost blog.'

^_^
